Future Proofing

Kakahu is breeding to make Angus cattle more profitable. They need to be fertile, calve easily, mature early, and taste terrific!

This year all but 7 of our spring yearling bulls quality for an A+ endorsement from AngusPure. The rest all qualify for an A. In other words, they are potential sires for top production across entire herds.

If breeders want higher returns, they must look at marbling.

The bonus payments that Alliance are offering is encouraging breeders to aim high. Kakahu are benchmarking ourselves by placing all our heifers and steers though Alliance’s Handpicked programme. We need profitable cattle that have all the maternal values, but also can achieve the high premiums that procurement companies are offering.

We source the best genetics from all around the world and rigorously put them to the test through Inherit Select, with 17 different traits, and Leachman’s $Profit, both multi-breed analyses. Our herd is in the top 5% for $Profit. Both analyses are great ways of knowing which females we need to cull, and which bulls are breeding the best to our requirements. Unfortunately the $Profit results have not come out in time when we went to print, so we will have the $Profit available on sale day, you can also give Tom a call prior to the sale and he will email the you any bull/s you would like on the $Profit.

Inherit Select is specifically designed for the commercial breeder. We strongly recommend that you think of making use of it. It can save thousands and speed up your genetic progress. Call Tom for advice.

You will notice in our catalogue a new trait. NFI-F. This is Net Food Efficiency. The lower the score the better, and the average for 2022 is +0.18.

This is the future proofing we are adding to our breeding program. Simply put, you have two animals of equal weight, but the first has had to eat much more to reach that weight than the other one. We want the latter because it will be cheaper to raise, ready to kill earlier and most importantly, it will be more environmentally friendly. This is because if you run a Net Feed Efficient herd you will be able to run fewer cattle on your land, to get the same amount of meat production. This to us is even more important than it ever has been before with the ever increasing costs of farming.

NFI applies to a grass feeding regime or a feed lot situation.

Bulls in the sale have been semen tested by Xcell Breeding Services.

We look forward to seeing you on October 6th. Sale at 1pm.
